Passanageset Park at Broad Meadows Marsh
Passive recreational park and historical landmark in Quincy, Massachusetts

Passanageset Park at Broad Meadows Marsh has two pedestrian entrances, one by the parking lot of the Quincy Youth Arena (60 Murphy Memorial Drive) and one by the parking lot of the Broad Meadows Middle School (50 Calvin Road).

Passanageset Park at Broad Meadows Marsh is a beautiful, water-front park boasting magnificent views, 1.3 miles of walking trails, and several acres of upland meadow. The park is a wonderful spot for bird watching, with over 150 species spotted since the park was re-opened in 2015 after the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers completed its salt marsh habitat restoration project at the site.

After the restoration project was finished, an extensive research project done by the “History Girls” at the Broad Meadows Middle School led to the renaming of the site. The students learned that the area was once Passanageset, a seasonal home to the Massachusett People and seat of Chickataubut, Principal Sac ‘hem of the Massachusett when the English settlers arrived. Chickataubut buried his mother at Passanageset, which suggests that it was his mother’s village and perhaps the birthplace of Chickataubut.

Four interpretive signs at the park provide more information about the site and its Native American history. The U.S. Army Corp of Engineers’ project and the City of Quincy’s installation of the interpretive signs have helped to restore and preserve both the ecological and historical significance of this site.
